One Choice Can Change a Life

The Power is Out

I have a magazine article due and was diligently typing away when the power went out. It’s been off now for over an hour. How dependent we are on power. My desktop sits like a big boulder, taunting me with the deadline I can’t make unless I can get back on it soon. And then there’s that class I’m supposed to be in ths afternoon. Well, I have a double door garage. Ever tried to open one of those manually? Yeah. Almost wrenched my shoulder out of the socket trying to get it to budge, but ended up just hanging there like a sack of beef carcass (not a pretty picture). Next I thought I’d go ahead and eat since I seem to have plenty of extra time on my hands (not that I know what time it is because all of the clocks are electric). This just presented another dilemma. I never realized how much food I keep around that has to be cooked, warmed up or otherwise processed before I can eat it. Unless I want to eat some nasty packaged breakfast bar or cold can of soup, I’m out of luck. At least I can feel comfortable knowing I can open the soup since I do own a hand-cranked opener.

You cannot believe how quiet it has become without the hum of the water feature, the drone of the refrigerator, the buzz of the computer, or the gurgle of the water heater. It has made all of my personal noises seem so loud! The roar of my hungry belly, the swish of my breathing and the cracking of my bones. I had forgotten how loud we humans are. Well, I guess it’s time to break out that cold can of soup and search out some good, old-fashioned pen and paper and get on with the article.
